Jeju Political Scene Shaken by Investigation into Prostitution Allegations Against Democratic Party Jeju Council Member
People Power Party's Commentary Criticizes Morality, Revealing Lawmakers' Names
No Separate Statement from Democratic Party, "Will See Ethics Committee Results"
The revelation that a current Jeju Provincial Council member was investigated by the police for illegal prostitution allegations following a drunk driving incident earlier this year has sent shockwaves through Jeju's political circles.
On the 11th, the Jeju Provincial Party of the People Power Party issued a statement directly attacking the Jeju Provincial Party of the Democratic Party of Korea regarding the misconduct allegations against the incumbent council member, questioning, "How far will the moral decline go?"
They continued, "We are witnessing the true face of a politician who is the youngest member of the Jeju Provincial Council and was a symbol of the Democratic Party's youth nomination in the last local elections," criticizing sharply.
They also stated, "After severely embarrassing Democratic Party members and the local constituents who elected him with a drunk driving incident, we are appalled to learn that he was recently investigated by the police over prostitution allegations."
The People Power Party's Jeju Provincial Party continued their offensive against the Democratic Party.
They said, "We wonder if there was even minimal vetting for those nominated as council members. It is questionable whether the Democratic Party's Jeju Provincial Party even has a party chairman," directly targeting the opposition.
The Democratic Party's Jeju Provincial Party has not yet issued a separate statement but is reportedly scheduled to hold an ethics tribunal at 2 p.m. on the 12th to discuss disciplinary measures against the council member in question.
A representative of the Democratic Party's Jeju Provincial Party said, "We will hold the ethics tribunal tomorrow and make a judgment based on the results."
Following the political turmoil in Jeju, the issue is also stirring controversy on a major online community frequently accessed by Jeju residents.
Comments include criticisms such as, "Image-making by directing children's traffic in the morning, prostitution and drunk driving at night," and "If he had been expelled last time, this wouldn't have happened. If this guy finishes his term as a council member, he will be a disgrace to Jeju," alongside remarks like, "Young people can make mistakes, right? Is it worse because he's a foreigner? Maybe just curiosity," making it the biggest controversy in the Jeju area.
Meanwhile, the prostitution investigation involving Council Member A was uncovered by the Jeju Police Agency's Narcotics Investigation Unit during a crackdown. It is reported that from November last year to March this year, the council member repeatedly transferred money via bank accounts to bars involved in foreigner prostitution incidents in Jeju.
Multiple attempts to contact Council Member A were unsuccessful, and he is currently firmly denying the allegations. He is expected to release a statement on the 12th.
