The current status of Dr. Hwang Woo-suk, who shook our society over 20 years ago with the ‘stem cell research paper fabrication scandal,’ has been revealed through Netflix.
The recently released Netflix documentary King of Clones: The Fall of Dr. Hwang Woo-suk features Dr. Hwang, who had withdrawn from the public eye after the ‘nationwide scientific fraud,’ continuing his animal cloning research at the Abu Dhabi Biotech Research Center in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Vice President Mansour is widely known as a global billionaire and the owner of the English Premier League team Manchester City.
When asked, “How many camels have you cloned in the UAE so far?” he answered, “More than 150.” The camera showed him commuting through the arid desert, accompanied by a narration explaining that “although he achieved a historic first in human history, he completely fell and collapsed.”
Dr. Hwang rose to prominence as an authority in biotechnology and a ‘hero’ who opened a new era in the treatment of incurable diseases by successfully extracting and culturing human embryonic stem cells for the first time in the world in 2004. However, it was soon revealed that some of his stem cell research papers were fabricated and that the research process, including egg retrieval, was unethical, causing tremendous shock and controversy.
Following a prosecution investigation and eight years of legal battles, Dr. Hwang was dismissed from his professorship at Seoul National University. He was effectively expelled from the scientific community and disappeared from the public eye, seemingly walking the path of downfall.
However, since 2016, after cloning the deceased pet dog of Latifa Al Maktoum, a UAE princess and Crown Princess of the Fujairah region, he has maintained connections in the Middle East and continued his research. He is known to have cloned more than 1,000 animals, including dogs and camels.
In the documentary, Dr. Hwang reflected on his past glory and downfall, saying, “It can be seen as a lesson and a milestone for the Korean and global scientific communities. If I were to make excuses by saying there was pressure, that would be cowardly.”

He added, “It happened because of greed, but no one can use that as an excuse. If I were given the chance to be reborn and choose my life again, I would want to walk the same path.”
