IMO, Agreement on International Shipping 'Carbon Neutrality' Around 2050

View original imageThe International Maritime Organization (IMO) has agreed to achieve carbon neutrality in the international shipping sector by around 2050.
On the 7th (local time), IMO member states adopted a revised Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy (GHC) at the 80th Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting held at the IMO headquarters in London, UK.
The member states agreed to reach carbon neutrality in international shipping by 2050 or thereabouts, taking into account the circumstances of various countries.

They committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 20% (with a 30% aspirational target) by 2030 compared to total emissions in 2008, and by at least 70% (with an 80% aspirational target) by 2040. These are not mandatory targets but indicators for monitoring progress.
