Payments Starting Next Year... Andong City Budget Preparation
On the 6th, Andong City signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at Andong City Hall with the Andong City Council, Andong National University, Catholic Sangji College, and Andong Science College to support the ‘Academic Encouragement Scholarship for University Students in the Andong Region.’
Through this agreement, starting next year, local university students will receive a 1,000,000 KRW ‘Academic Encouragement Scholarship’ once per academic year to foster outstanding talent under stable academic conditions. Furthermore, the goal is to attract talent from other regions and prevent the outflow of local talent, thereby contributing to regional economic revitalization through an increase in the youth population.

Andong City and the Andong City Council will actively cooperate to secure the necessary budget for the ‘Academic Encouragement Scholarship’ support, while each university will operate the scholarship program to nurture talent that contributes to the local community, ensuring continuous support for students through mutual cooperation. To this end, the city is preparing to enact related ordinances.
The eligibility criteria require applicants to be university students enrolled in universities located within the city, have an address in Andong as of the application date, and have a minimum average grade of 70 points (C) or higher in the previous semester.
Currently, out of 8,800 university students in the Andong region, only 2,400 have an address in Andong, while the remaining 6,400 have addresses in other regions.
An official from Andong City stated, “We are currently preparing the budget to provide funds starting next year to about 3,500 students, including 2,400 students who have an address in Andong and an estimated 1,100 students who are expected to move their address to Andong.”
This ‘Academic Encouragement Scholarship’ support project is expected not only to induce the transfer of enrolled students with addresses in other regions but also to serve as a merit for future university entrance exam candidates, thereby effectively attracting young people to the region.
The Academic Encouragement Scholarship support project for university students in the Andong region is a pledge of Kwon Ki-chang, Mayor of Andong, during the 8th local government term. Andong City plans to create the nation’s first exemplary case of coexistence and mutual development between local governments and universities located within the region.
Jeong Tae-ju, President of Andong National University, expressed gratitude, saying, “Through this agreement, we sincerely thank Andong City Hall and the Andong City Council for greatly helping students reduce their financial burden and focus on their studies,” and added, “The university will do its best to nurture local talent and grow together with the local community.”
Kwon Ki-ik, Chairperson of the Andong City Council, stated, “For local areas to thrive, local universities must thrive,” and added, “We will continuously strive to ensure that local students can focus on their studies stably and grow into local talent.”
