CocoLee, Singer of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Mulan Theme Songs, Dies by Suicide After Battling Depression
Suffering from Depression for Years, Recently Worsened
One of the Top Female Singers in the Chinese-speaking World in the 1990s
Famous Hong Kong singer Coco Lee (Chinese name Li Yuan), who sang the theme songs for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Mulan, has died by suicide.
On the 5th (local time), Chinese newspaper Pengpai and the British BBC reported that Coco Lee passed away on the 5th.
Coco Lee's family announced her death on Weibo, stating, "She suffered from depression years ago, and her condition rapidly worsened recently. She made an extreme choice and was treated in the hospital but never regained consciousness and passed away."

In a letter titled "A Letter to Coco's Fans and Friends," Nancy mourned, "This year marks the 30th anniversary of Coco's debut," adding, "For 29 years, she not only brought us endless joy and surprise with her passionate singing and dancing but also worked hard to pioneer new horizons in the international music scene for Chinese-speaking singers."
Nancy continued, "As a family, we feel very honored to have had such a wonderful and outstanding younger sister. We are grateful that heaven gave us such a kind angel. Now, we hope she has gone to a happier place and is free from the torment of depression."
Coco Lee was born in Hong Kong in 1975 and immigrated to the United States as a child. She completed her elementary, middle, and high school education in the U.S. In 1994, while attending the University of California, Irvine, she won an award at a singing competition held in Hong Kong, which launched her entertainment career.
After gaining popularity, she was considered one of the top female singers in the Chinese-speaking world in the late 1990s. In 1999, she performed on stage during Michael Jackson's concert in Korea. In 2000, she sang the theme song for the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the following year, she performed at the Academy Awards ceremony as a nominee for Best Original Song. She also sang the theme song "Reflection" for the Disney animation Mulan.
Coco Lee married Canadian billionaire Bruce Rockowitz, who is 16 years her senior, in October 2011, but it is known that they divorced several years ago.
