Zuckerberg vs. Musk Showdown... Meta Launches 'Seuredeu', Twitter Rival
Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, announced on the 6th that it will launch a new app called 'Threads,' which allows users to share real-time news and have conversations through text.
While Instagram is a space for expressing oneself and connecting with the world through photos and videos, Threads expands that connection medium to text. Each post supports up to 500 characters. Users can upload links to external websites, photos, or videos up to 5 minutes long. It allows users to freely share their thoughts, follow friends or favorite creators, and communicate with people around the world who share common interests.

The Threads app allows login with an Instagram ID without a separate registration process. Users will use the same account name as on Instagram, but can set a different profile picture and bio. Accounts followed on Instagram can also be followed on Threads, and users can find and add new accounts. The Threads feed displays content from accounts the user follows as well as recommended content.
Various user protection features introduced on Instagram are also provided on Threads. Users under 16 years old will have their accounts set to private by default upon first login to Threads. Users can manage who can mention them or reply to their posts. Replies containing specific words or phrases can be hidden. Blocking, restricting, and reporting other accounts is possible, and accounts blocked on Instagram are automatically blocked on Threads as well.
Threads is Meta's first app embodying its vision for an 'open social network.' Meta plans to apply the decentralized social network protocol 'ActivityPub' in the future, enabling interoperability with other apps that support the ActivityPub protocol, such as Mastodon and WordPress. The goal is to develop Threads into a new form of social media where users on different interoperable platforms can follow and communicate with each other.
