China Public Security Arrests Group Creating Rumor Videos Using ChatGPT
Illegal Purchase of Thousands of Internet Accounts
Traffic Induced by Fake Video Production
Chinese police have apprehended a group that used the generative artificial intelligence (AI) 'ChatGPT' to produce videos containing false information.
According to the official WeChat account (China's version of KakaoTalk) of the Public Security Bureau of Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province, on the 5th, the Shangyu District Public Security Sub-bureau recently cracked down on the so-called 'internet water army' (online comment squads) who posted fake videos for profit, arresting three individuals who created rumor videos using ChatGPT.
Earlier, on the 2nd of last month, the Shangyu Public Security discovered that a netizen had posted a video online showing a fire at the Shangyu Industrial Park. After confirming that the rapidly spreading video was false, the police identified a technology company located outside Zhejiang Province as having criminal liability (public disturbance) and arrested the suspects on the 5th of the same month.
Investigations revealed that since May of this year, the company had illegally purchased thousands of video accounts on the internet and used ChatGPT technology to create fake videos. The company profited from the increased traffic generated.
