Incheon Port Grain Warehouse Transformed into a Complex Cultural Space... 'Sangsang Platform' Completed
An old grain warehouse located in Incheon’s Inner Port has been remodeled and transformed into a complex cultural space.
Incheon City recently announced on the 5th that it has completed the construction of 'Sangsang Platform' in Bukseong-dong 1-ga, Jung-gu, and plans to attract cultural, exhibition, and experience facilities for citizens and open the space within this year.
Sangsang Platform is Incheon City’s representative economic base-type urban regeneration project that transformed the former grain warehouse, built in 1978 and the largest in Asia (270m long, 45m wide), into a complex cultural tourism facility. The project cost a total of 100.3 billion KRW, combining national and city funds.
Originally, Incheon City and a private business operator planned to develop 30% and 70% of the entire Sangsang Platform space respectively, but the project was halted due to the private operator’s financial difficulties.
At the end of last year, the city terminated the agreement with the private operator and directly carried out the project, completing construction on the 14th of last month.
The city and Incheon Tourism Organization plan to open Sangsang Platform to citizens within this year through a content attraction contest held this month. The Incheon Tourism Organization is scheduled to relocate its headquarters to Sangsang Platform in February next year.
The city is also planning various events involving residents, such as the Incheon Landing Operation commemorative event in September and Citizens’ Day event in October, utilizing Sangsang Platform.
Through the operation of Sangsang Platform, the city expects an economic ripple effect over the next five years, including 130.6 billion KRW in production and added value inducement and employment inducement of 801 people.
An official from Incheon City stated, "We will do our best to ensure that Sangsang Platform harmonizes with historical and cultural resources such as the Open Port and Wolmi Tourism Special Zone, playing a central role in Jemulpo and contributing to the revitalization of the local economy in the original downtown areas of Jung-gu and Dong-gu."
