On the 4th (local time), Governor Kim Dong-yeon met Ashwini Vaishnaw, Indian Minister of Electronics and Information Technology, at the Indian Railway Headquarters building in New Delhi, stating, "World-leading semiconductor companies are making significant investments in Gyeonggi Province," and explained, "According to investment plans by Samsung and SK Hynix, Gyeonggi Province aims to support a mega semiconductor cluster to become a global semiconductor hub."
He added, "If India's excellent human resources in information and communication technology (IT) join forces, it could create great synergy," and "I hope Gyeonggi Province and India can cooperate, help each other, and develop together."
Governor Kim particularly proposed the formation of a working-level consultative body involving the Indian government, Gyeonggi Province, domestic large corporations, and semiconductor experts. Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw accepted this proposal on the spot.
Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw explained India's ongoing economic policies divided into four major areas: infrastructure development such as roads, railways, ports, and airports; manufacturing promotion policy (Make in India); electronic payment system establishment; and innovation and startups, introducing that there is great potential for cooperation with Korea.
In fact, India is paying special attention to fostering the semiconductor industry by attracting research and development (R&D) centers of major semiconductor companies such as Intel and Samsung Electronics. Gyeonggi Province is home to Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, the world's largest memory semiconductor manufacturers, and since Governor Kim Dong-yeon's inauguration, the world's top 1st to 4th semiconductor equipment companies have successively established research institutes in Gyeonggi Province.
Governor Kim then met Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce and Industry, at the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry building in New Delhi to discuss mutual interests.
At this meeting, Governor Kim emphasized, "We will strive to make the India International Exhibition and Convention Centre, scheduled to open in October under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's Industrial Trade Promotion Agency project, the best convention center not only in Asia but worldwide, with KINTEX as the operating institution," and added, "As the governor representing the largest province in the Republic of Korea, I will work hard to foster cooperative relations with India."
The high-level meetings with the Indian Ministers of Electronics and Information Technology and Commerce and Industry were supported by Governor Kim Dong-yeon's long-standing ties with India.
In 2017, during his tenure as Deputy Prime Minister for Economy, Governor Kim met the Indian Finance Minister at the Korea-India Finance Ministers' Meeting and promised economic cooperation in finance and trade, and later that year, he met the Chief Minister of Maharashtra to discuss ways for Korean companies to enter the market.
Additionally, in March of this year, he met Amit Kumar, Indian Ambassador to Korea, to discuss expanding cooperation in human exchange, semiconductors, electric vehicles, and other future new industries. It is said that this meeting with the Ministers of Electronics and Information Technology and Commerce and Industry was realized as part of these efforts.
