Lee Jae-myung: "Even a Dirty Peace Is Better Than a Won War... From Ceasefire to End of War"
"Winning a war is good, but winning without fighting is more important"
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 4th, "Peace is better than war," adding, "It is a clear fact that no matter how dirty peace is, it is better than a victorious war."
On the same day, during a greeting at the National Assembly at the meeting with the delegation of the 70th anniversary of the armistice and the Korean Peninsula Peace Action, Lee said, "Even if you win after tremendous mass destruction and killing, even if you win the war, it may be better than losing, but what great good is that?"
He said, "Winning in war is important. We cannot afford to lose. We must gather strong national defense power and the full strength of the people to definitely win," but added, "There is something more important than this, which is winning without fighting."
Lee emphasized, "What is more important is the state where there is no need to fight, creating peace," and "No matter how much effort is made to create peace, it can never be excessive."
He said, "The Korean Peninsula is in a very geopolitically and historically unstable state," adding, "Overcoming this instability and building peace is the greatest mission given to us." He continued, "Since the Korean War on June 25, we have experienced countless confrontations between the North and South, and it is an obvious fact that this has caused great damage and loss to the people and the nation without needing to be stated."
He also expressed the view that peace on the Korean Peninsula is important for the economy. Lee said, "From the perspective of people's livelihood and the economy, peace can be said to be a very important foundation," and introduced, "Even a small example: if the situation on the Korean Peninsula is unstable, foreign investment inevitably decreases, and even when taking foreign currency loans, higher interest must be paid." He added, "As we are currently experiencing, the same stocks are discounted simply because they are Korean Peninsula or Korean companies, right? Peace is the economy, peace is food?such words resonate."

Lee also emphasized that the goal is to end the war. He said, "The Democratic Party, marking the 70th anniversary of the armistice, pledges to do its best to move beyond the armistice to a peace treaty and to create a stable Korean Peninsula where a peace agreement is possible." Earlier, President Yoon Suk-yeol criticized calls for a declaration of the end of the war as "anti-state forces." At the Freedom Federation's founding anniversary event on the 28th of last month, President Yoon said, "Anti-state forces with distorted historical awareness and irresponsible national views pleaded for lifting UN Security Council sanctions against the North Korean communist group that is advancing nuclear armament, and sang the chorus of a declaration of the end of the war to dismantle the UN Command," adding, "It was a chorus of a declaration of the end of the war to prevent the UN Command and its forces from automatically operating if North Korea invades again."
