Dongwon Group's Three Listed Companies Publish '2022 Sustainability Management Report'
Dongwon Group's three listed affiliates (Dongwon Industries, Dongwon F&B, Dongwon Systems) announced on the 3rd that they have each published the "2022 Sustainability Management Report," which contains their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management performance and direction from last year.
Dongwon Industries, newly launched as a business holding company after the holding company merger last year, has expanded the existing ESG Committee under the board of directors to a group-level "ESG Management Committee" and has been operating it since December last year to actively implement ESG management. The ESG Management Committee selected three core agendas: △ responding to climate change and reducing carbon emissions △ talent management △ ethical management and realization of fair justice.
In particular, it has joined the "2050 Carbon Neutrality" initiative to reduce carbon emissions to zero by 2050 and set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 compared to 2020. Additionally, it has established a cooperative relationship with Hyundai and Kia Motors to recycle discarded fishing nets into automobile parts and is actively working to reduce marine plastics by changing plastic Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) used in fishing operations to biodegradable bio-materials. Furthermore, to ensure transparent and ethical corporate management, last year it expanded the number of outside directors from one to five and simultaneously established an Audit Committee and Outside Director Candidate Recommendation Committee, both composed entirely of outside directors under the board of directors, thereby strengthening the board’s expertise and independence.
Comprehensive food company Dongwon F&B has established a mid- to long-term vision of "becoming a global food company contributing to human health" and is expanding sustainable management throughout the entire process from food development to production, distribution, and sales to achieve this. In particular, it aims to reduce the annual plastic usage in food packaging by 15% compared to 2021 and is actively implementing this goal. Last year, Dongwon F&B reduced approximately 1,388 tons of plastic annually through initiatives such as lightweighting Dongwon Spring Water PET bottles and eco-packaging for Yangban seaweed. This is expected to have an environmental protection effect equivalent to planting about 350,000 30-year-old pine trees.
Dongwon Systems, which is evolving from a comprehensive packaging materials company into an advanced materials company, is continuously expanding its business in eco-friendly packaging materials, including secondary batteries, which are considered eco-friendly future materials, and is transitioning to a green business. To this end, in July last year, it invested approximately 70.5 billion KRW to expand a factory for producing cylindrical cans for secondary batteries at its Asan plant in Chungnam Province, and in May of the same year, it invested about 80 billion KRW to establish an aseptic beverage factory in Hoengseong County, Gangwon Province. Aseptic beverages use about 20% less plastic than regular PET beverages. In addition, it is actively producing eco-friendly packaging materials certified with low-carbon "green technology" and the international recycled standard certification "GRS."
