Yangcheon-gu Operates 3 Safe Lodgings for Elderly to Escape Tropical Nights
Operating Safe Accommodations for Low-Income Elderly Vulnerable to Housing Conditions in Collaboration with Three Local Lodgings from July to August
Residents Can Obtain Usage Application Confirmation Certificates at Community Centers and Use the Facilities Free of Charge from 8 PM to 8 AM During Heatwave Alerts
196 Daytime Cooling Centers Also Operated at Community Centers, Welfare Centers, and Other Locations
Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gijae) announced that it will operate ‘Cooling Shelter Safe Accommodations’ for two months from July to August in cooperation with three local lodging facilities to support low-income elderly residents vulnerable to heatwaves due to poor housing conditions.
To this end, the district signed agreements with three lodging facilities, one in each legal dong, to provide accommodations that will serve as safe shelters from tropical nights until August. Eligible users include low-income elderly households such as basic livelihood security recipients and near-poverty groups living in poor housing environments without air conditioning, such as small rooms, rooftop rooms, and goshiwon (small dormitory-style rooms), who are vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
Residents who wish to use the safe accommodations must apply at their local community center. The community center will verify eligibility and check room availability before issuing a usage application confirmation certificate.
Residents holding the usage application confirmation certificate can use the safe accommodations free of charge from 8 PM on the day a heatwave alert is issued until 8 AM the following day. The principle is one room per person, but up to two family members may stay in one room. Additionally, transportation services to the safe accommodations will be provided for elderly residents with mobility difficulties.
Furthermore, the district operates 196 daytime cooling centers for the elderly, consisting of community centers, welfare centers, senior centers, and cultural facilities, until September. Operating hours are from 9 AM to 6 PM on weekdays. Extended shelters at community centers and senior centers remain open until 9 PM on weekdays during heatwave alerts and from 9 AM to 6 PM on weekends and public holidays.
