"I will accelerate Namgu's development during the remaining term of the 8th local government"
Kim Byeongnae, Mayor of Gwangju Nam-gu, Celebrates 1st Anniversary of Minseon 8th Term Inauguration
Kim Byeong-nae, Mayor of Nam-gu, Gwangju, evaluated on the 29th, ahead of the 1st anniversary of the 8th local government inauguration, that "Nam-gu is undergoing dazzling changes and development based on the growth momentum accumulated over the past four years, and the pace will accelerate further."
In particular, he revealed that through the New Deal project around Baegun Square, the development axis centered on the old downtown was firmly established, and various living sports infrastructures and living SOC complex facilities were built throughout the neighborhoods, achieving improvements in the quality of life for 220,000 residents.
Mayor Kim Byeong-nae said, "The first year of the 8th local government was a year of doing our best to realize the hopes and expectations sent by the residents, and various projects pursued with great determination since the 7th term have become the growth engine of Nam-gu, leading to dazzling changes and development from the start of the 8th term."
Mayor Kim claimed that the biggest achievement in the past year of the 8th local government was the urban regeneration project of the old downtown area, including Baegun Square.
Following the second half of last year, the Street Food Zone and Media Wall projects were consecutively introduced this year, signaling the beginning of the revival of the Baegun Square area. The highlight of the project, the construction of the largest Blue Road Bridge in Gwangju connecting the disconnected Blue Road Park walking paths, is also scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
In addition, in Yangnim-dong, major hub facilities such as the Cultural Spring Center, Harmony Center, Youth Creation Center, and public parking lot were established to enhance competitiveness as a tourist attraction. Efforts are also underway to promote balanced development between the new and old downtown areas by advancing projects such as the Time Post Office and the construction of a living culture center.
Mayor Kim said, "It is difficult to find successful cases of revitalizing old downtowns nationwide, but the New Deal projects in Baegun Square and Yangnim-dong led by Nam-gu will become representative success cases. Baegun Square will be reborn as a space where people, culture, and economy meet, becoming a hot place."
He evaluated that the national industrial complex developed in the Daechon area is taking shape, and the local industrial complex is also stretching out, increasing expectations for regional economic revitalization.
The urban high-tech industrial complex, a national industrial complex, houses research institutes and companies including the Korea Basic Science Institute Gwangju Center, and the Energy Industry Convergence Support Center and Energy Industry Knowledge Industry Center are also expected to be established.
In the Energy Valley Industrial Complex, where construction is in the final stages, 32 companies have confirmed their move-in, and recently, with the approval of the industrial complex plan change by the Gwangju Free Economic Zone Authority, logistics businesses can also move into the complex land here, which is expected to increase demand from related companies wishing to settle in Energy Valley.
Furthermore, through prevention-centered administration responding to various disasters and infectious diseases, Nam-gu was recognized as a safe city by receiving the highest grade among autonomous districts in Gwangju in the nationwide regional safety index evaluation by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.
Additionally, Mayor Kim presented achievements such as the construction of the Bandabi Sports Center in Wolsan Park for the disabled and the Unification Train project, which is being carried out at the local government level to wish for peace and unification on the Korean Peninsula.
