This is a redemption match for Sergio Garcia (Spain).
Starting on the 30th (local time), he will challenge for the championship at the LIV Golf Valderrama 8th tournament, held over three days at Real Club Valderrama in San Roque, Cadiz, Spain (par 71, 7,010 yards). This is the first tournament held since the sudden merger announcement between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, which had been in opposition. The total prize money is $25 million (approximately 32.8 billion KRW), including $20 million for the individual event and $5 million for the team event.
The LIV Golf tournament is being held in Europe for the first time in a year since the season opener in the UK last June. Following this tournament, the 9th tournament will open on the 7th of next month in the UK. After that, four more tournaments will continue in the United States.
Above all, attention is focused on the performance of Garcia, a representative star of Spanish golf. He emerged like a comet in 1999 by finishing runner-up at the major PGA Championship at the age of 19. He has won 16 times on the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) and 11 times on the PGA Tour. In 2017, he won the Masters, wiping away the sorrow of being without a major title.
Garcia transferred to LIV Golf and, as he did not receive ranking points, his world ranking quickly dropped. He is currently ranked 209th. To participate in major tournaments, he must go through qualifiers. Last month, he qualified for the US Open, marking his 24th consecutive appearance. He is also listed among the players for the final qualifying round of The Open, the last major tournament next month. He is determined to demonstrate his resilience through this tournament held on his home course.
