Lee Jae-myung, the party leader, is also scheduled to visit the hunger strike site in front of the National Assembly in the afternoon to meet with the bereaved families of the Itaewon disaster.
The Democratic Party plans to designate the Itaewon Special Act as a fast-track bill and process it at the plenary session of the National Assembly on the 30th.
Seo Young-kyo, a Supreme Council member of the Democratic Party, appeared on YTN Radio that morning and said, "The Itaewon Special Act must be passed on the 30th." Seo emphasized, "The Itaewon Special Act requests the ability to demand materials and hold hearings for truth-finding," adding, "This content should naturally be brought to the plenary session and passed together by both ruling and opposition parties."
Earlier, Park Kwang-on, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, also announced on social media on the 26th, "Together with the Justice Party, Basic Income Party, and Progressive Party, who shared the intention to propose the special act, we will designate the Itaewon Disaster Special Act as a fast-track bill at the plenary session on the 30th."
Park said, "Politics is infinitely ashamed in the face of this tragic reality where people who lost their children and families are conducting signature campaigns, holding memorial rallies, participating in relay marches, and even fasting," adding, "Politics must do what it should: save lives and ensure no one is wronged."
The day before, the bereaved families of the Itaewon disaster visited the offices of 183 opposition lawmakers who participated in proposing the Itaewon Special Act to request the fast-track designation. The families handed over handwritten letters and leaflets urging the enactment of the Itaewon Special Act.
The Itaewon Special Act includes provisions such as the formation of a special investigation committee for independent truth-finding and the ability to request the National Assembly's approval for appointing a special prosecutor if a special investigation is necessary.
