Prosecutors Request Arrest Warrant for Song Young-gil's Former Aide in Democratic Party 'Money Envelope Distribution Suspicion' Case

The prosecution investigating the 2021 Democratic Party of Korea's party convention cash envelope distribution allegations has moved to secure the custody of Park Mo, a former aide to former party leader Song Young-gil.

View original imageThe Anti-Corruption Investigation Division 2 of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Kim Young-cheol) filed an arrest warrant for Park on the 27th on charges including violation of the Political Funds Act.
Park is accused of receiving political funds by having the external organization "Peace and Livelihood Issues Research Institute" (Meoksa-yeon) pay 92.4 million won for opinion poll costs related to former leader Song's chances of winning, commissioned to a polling company in connection with the party leader elections in August 2020 and May 2021, and of preparing false estimates as if the polls were conducted for Meoksa-yeon's own projects.
Additionally, Park is charged with conspiring with Kang Rae-gu, former Standing Auditor of Korea Water Resources Corporation, to receive 50 million won from sponsor Kim Mo as funds for the primary campaign to elect former leader Song at the May 2021 Democratic Party convention.
He is also accused of conspiring with Kang and former Democratic Party Deputy Secretary-General Lee Jeong-geun to provide 60 million won in two installments to lawmaker Yoon Kwan-seok under the pretext of parliamentary disbursement in April of the same year.
Furthermore, Park is charged with providing 500,000 won to Seoul regional situation room chief Lee Mo as campaign activity expenses, and conspiring with Lee to operate a call center for phone election campaigning through another Seoul regional situation room chief Park Mo, providing 7 million won as operating expenses.

Park is also accused of instructing Kim Mo, the secretary-general of Meoksa-yeon, to replace all hard disks of the Meoksa-yeon office computers last November to prevent discovery of materials related to the party leader election campaign activities, and ensuring the replacement was carried out (obstruction of evidence).
