DA Tech Takes a Step Closer to Commercializing Rare Earth Magnets for Electric Vehicles and Robots as a 'Daehangma'... 'Best Magnetic Properties'
DA Technology has taken a step closer to the commercialization of non-rare-earth permanent magnets. They have completed the prototype production of the ‘Manganese-Bismuth (Mn-Bi) Ferrite Magnet,’ which is gaining attention as a rival to rare-earth magnets.
On the 26th, DA Technology announced that, together with Corisen, they have produced the initial prototype of the domestically developed Mn-Bi ferrite magnet.
Corisen recently received the first prototype sample from the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS). They will proceed with full-scale pilot testing to verify and improve performance. Based on the prototype, they plan to hold partnering meetings with related domestic and international companies. The company explained that they have already been conducting preliminary collaboration discussions with global electric vehicle manufacturers, battery producers, as well as domestic home appliance companies.
In May, Corisen signed a ‘Mn-Bi Ferrite Magnet Technology Implementation Agreement’ with KIMS and is currently in the process of patenting and technology transfer. With the patent application preparation for related core technologies nearing completion, the push for commercialization of the Mn-Bi ferrite magnet is expected to gain further momentum.
Mn-Bi ferrite is a new material and technology developed for the first time in the world by Dr. Chuljin Choi of KIMS and is called the ‘fourth magnet.’ Dr. Choi is a leading global expert in magnetic materials, having been listed consecutively for 18 years since 2003 in the United States’ ‘Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering,’ one of the world’s top three biographical directories.
The research achievements were introduced in 2020 in the world-renowned physics and materials science journal ‘PSS RRL (Physica Status Solidi Rapid Research Letters).’ Additionally, recognizing these accomplishments, Dr. Choi received the grand prize in the ‘Top 100 National R&D Achievements’ in 2020.
Professor Choi’s research team developed a new high-vibration magnetic powder manufacturing process optimized for producing Mn-Bi alloys, achieving the world’s first and best magnetic properties. They simultaneously solved the issues of phase decomposition and oxidation, which were problems in existing Mn-Bi alloy manufacturing processes. By resolving the grain alignment problem during bulk processing, it is now possible to produce high-purity Mn-Bi alloy powder.
While rare-earth permanent magnets face usage restrictions above 200°C due to degradation characteristics, the Mn-Bi ferrite magnet’s greatest strength is that it maintains magnetic properties even at 340°C, while being more cost-effective than rare-earth magnets.
