View original imageGwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is focusing on creating a ‘Yellow Safe School Zone’ to ensure a safe commuting environment for children.
First, the old yellow carpets will be replaced with sign block type and additionally installed.
Yellow carpets are triangular prism-shaped traffic facilities installed on sidewalks adjacent to crosswalks within school zones to prevent pedestrian accidents involving children.
Drivers can easily spot the yellow carpet areas marked in yellow, allowing them to pay more attention to safety.
Recently, the district newly installed and maintained yellow carpets at 14 locations around major crosswalks of 7 schools including Gunan Elementary School and Sinyang Elementary School. Since 2016, a total of 46 yellow carpets have been installed around 16 elementary schools.
The newly installed yellow carpets address the issues of fading paint (film-type material) and frequent damage. They have been refurbished with pigment-containing sign block type materials to enhance durability and visibility.
Along with this, various facilities are being installed prioritizing children’s safety to prevent traffic accidents and raise drivers’ awareness.
Two crosswalks within the school zone of Yonggok Elementary School are currently operating pilot ‘yellow crosswalks.’ Earlier this year, the sidewalk curbs along a 3.8 km no-parking zone in front of the main gates of 13 elementary schools were painted yellow to improve visibility.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We are working hard to create safe commuting routes in school zones,” and added, “We will do our best to create an environment where children can be safely protected by expanding the installation of highly visible facilities.”
