Gwangju Seo-gu Council Democratic Party Members Urge Preservation of Pungam Lake's Original Form
Mayor Kang Gijeong of Gwangju City: "Please Listen to the Voices of the Residents"
Members of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Council affiliated with the Democratic Party of Korea have demanded that Mayor Kang Gi-jung of Gwangju once again listen to the voices of residents who wish to preserve the original form of Pungam Lake.
On the 22nd, the council members issued a statement expressing "deep regret over Mayor Kang Gi-jung of Gwangju Metropolitan City breaking his promise to the residents," and argued that "the mayor's approach to solving the water quality improvement issues of Pungam Lake is difficult to avoid criticism of being a one-way administrative process, despite his claim to work together with the citizens."
They continued, "As the representative of Gwangju citizens and the head of Gwangju, Mayor Kang should be cautious in his official statements," and emphasized, "It is more desirable to calmly assess whether the project can be realized, sincerely share the progress, and announce the direction for fulfilling promises made to the residents."
Furthermore, they added, "He must demonstrate leadership in communication regarding the voices of residents who want to preserve the original form," and urged, "Withdraw the plan to partially reclaim Pungam Lake and fulfill the promise to incorporate residents' opinions in the process of preparing water quality improvement measures."
