Over 2,000 Unreported Infants from 2015 to 2022
The Board of Audit and Inspection revealed that during a regular audit of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, it identified over 2,000 cases of unreported births of domestic infants born since 2015.
During the investigation into the status of some of these infants, the case of a woman who gave birth to two babies, killed them, and stored their bodies in a refrigerator?the "Suwon Refrigerator Infant Corpse" case?was uncovered.

View original imageAccording to the Board of Audit and Inspection on the 22nd, during the ongoing regular audit of the Ministry of Health and Welfare since March, they investigated whether there were cases of infants born between 2015 and last year whose births were recorded but not officially registered. The investigation confirmed that the number of unreported infants reached over 2,000.
The total number of infants registered during this period was approximately 2,613,000. The Board of Audit and Inspection selected about 20 cases, roughly 1% of the unreported cases, and asked local governments to verify whether these children were safe.
During this verification process, the Suwon Refrigerator Infant Corpse case, reported on the 21st, came to light. The Women and Youth Division of the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency has urgently arrested and is investigating a woman in her 30s, identified as Ms. A, on suspicion of infant murder.
Ms. A is suspected of giving birth to babies in November 2018 and November 2019, killing them immediately afterward, and storing their bodies in a refrigerator inside her apartment unit located in Jangan-gu, Suwon City, where she resides.
