Yeosu City Launches 'Intensive Crackdown on Illegal Fishing'
Violation of Closed Season? Crackdown on Unauthorized Triple Layer Gill Nets
Fishing Patrol Vessel and High-Speed Boat Surprise Inspections
Yeosu City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Jeong Gi-myeong) announced that it will intensify crackdowns on illegal fishing activities to establish fishing order.
The city will deploy two fishery patrol vessels to the priority sea areas as needed until the 30th to monitor illegal fishing, and conduct surprise inspections using high-speed boats during early morning hours.
The main targets of the crackdown include illegal fishing activities such as catching fish during closed seasons, unauthorized fishing vessels operating illegal triple-layer gill nets, as well as violations of fisheries-related laws including illegal fishing gear loading, exceeding the allowed amount of fishing gear, unmarked gear, and unauthorized seed production.
Yeosu City plans to take strong measures such as filing police reports and administrative actions against fishing permits and marine engineer licenses when illegal fishing activities are detected.
Additionally, the city will continuously conduct educational activities, such as broadcasting marine public service announcements about closed season species at fishing sites, to contribute to the voluntary establishment of fishing order by fishing communities and fishermen.
A city official stated, “This crackdown aims to protect fishery resources by eradicating illegal activities, so we ask fishermen and anglers to avoid being caught violating regulations.”
Meanwhile, the closed season periods for major species are as follows: ▲Webfoot octopus (Jukkumi) May 1 to August 31 ▲Flathead mullet (Maljwichi) May 1 to July 31 ▲Common octopus (Chammungeo) May 24 to July 8 ▲Octopus (Nakji) June 21 to July 20 ▲Blue crab (Kkotge) June 21 to August 20 ▲Blackmouth croaker (Gaeseodae) July 1 to August 31 ▲Starry flounder (Dodari) December 1 to January 31.
