Five Changwon District Lawmakers Support Establishment of Changwon National University Medical School
Assembly Members Kang Gi-yoon, Kim Young-sun, Yoon Han-hong, Choi Hyung-doo, and Lee Dal-gon
Members of the National Assembly from Changwon, Gyeongnam, unanimously voted in favor of establishing the College of Medicine at the National Changwon University.
The Changwon University Alumni Association announced on the 19th that after publicly inquiring about the establishment of the College of Medicine at Changwon University to the National Assembly members of Changwon Seongsan-gu, Uichang-gu, Masanhwawon-gu, Masanhappo-gu, and Jinhae-gu, all five members from the five districts expressed unanimous support.
According to the Alumni Association, the members inquired were National Assembly member Kang Ki-yoon from Changwon Seongsan-gu, National Assembly member Kim Young-sun from Uichang-gu, National Assembly member Yoon Han-hong from Masanhwawon-gu, National Assembly member Choi Hyung-doo from Masanhappo-gu, and National Assembly member Lee Dal-gon from Jinhae-gu, all of whom responded with support.
The Alumni Association stated, “As the only national university in Changwon Special City, the hub city of Gyeongnam, and with the issue of establishing the College of Medicine at National Changwon University?a 31-year-long aspiration of both the university and the local community?drawing significant attention from the community, we conducted a public inquiry to ask the positions of the local district National Assembly members,” and began the inquiry.
The questions included three items: ▲Support or opposition to the establishment of the College of Medicine at National Changwon University, the only national university in Changwon Special City with a population exceeding one million but without a medical school ▲If in favor, future political support plans for establishing the College of Medicine ▲If opposed, reasons for opposition.
With unanimous support for establishing the College of Medicine at Changwon University, Assemblyman Yoon promised “multifaceted support including concretizing project progress.”
Assemblyman Choi stated, “Among cities with a population of over one million excluding the metropolitan area, Changwon Special City is the only one without a medical school, resulting in a poor healthcare system. We must improve the medical personnel training infrastructure and provide quality medical services to Changwon citizens,” adding, “I will actively cooperate to pass the special bill currently pending in the relevant standing committee, the Judiciary Committee, and the plenary session.”
Assemblyman Lee responded, “I will actively cooperate in publicizing the necessity of establishing the College of Medicine and in all matters required for its establishment.”
Assemblymen Kang and Kim previously attended a rally urging the establishment of the College of Medicine at Changwon University, stating, “If there is anything to be done to attract the College of Medicine to Changwon University, we will not hesitate and will do everything to the end, joining forces.”
Kim Jae-heung, president of the Alumni Association who conducted the public inquiry, said, “We must achieve the establishment of the College of Medicine at National Changwon University this time to guarantee the right to life and health of 3.3 million Gyeongnam residents and 1.04 million Changwon citizens,” and strongly urged, “We call on the local political community, which should represent public opinion, to actively step forward.”

He added, “The Alumni Association will continue to publicly inquire not only local National Assembly members but also future metropolitan and local council members to widely publicize their positions and unite efforts until the College of Medicine at National Changwon University is established.”
