Jeonbuk Police Agency's 'Bogo Tto Bogo' Traffic Campaign Shows Remarkable Effectiveness
Traffic Accident Deaths Decrease by 10.6% Compared to Previous Year
The number of traffic accident fatalities in the Jeonbuk region decreased by 10.6% (from 66 to 59) compared to last year.
The Jeonbuk Provincial Police Agency (Chief Kang Hwang-su) announced on the 16th that it has been implementing a special traffic accident prevention policy called ‘Report, Report, and Report Again Traffic Safety Activities’ from April 5th until the end of this month.
This special policy is being carried out as part of focused efforts to prevent pedestrian accidents following the amendment of the Road Traffic Act, which imposes a mandatory stop for right turns, and as a tailored measure for elderly traffic safety in response to the deepening super-aged society in the province and the high proportion of elderly traffic fatalities.
Specific activities include ▲strengthening promotional activities to establish a culture of pedestrian protection ▲signing a business agreement with the Korea Senior Citizens Association ▲providing outreach education and promotion targeting elderly pedestrians and conducting cognitive ability tests for elderly drivers ▲and implementing various policies such as safe driving of agricultural machinery.
The provincial police agency stated that they are conducting 366 crackdowns on pedestrian safety-threatening behaviors such as signal violations and failure to protect pedestrians, while simultaneously carrying out various promotional activities including LED electronic display boards, placard promotions, campaigns, education, and leaflet distribution.
Accident statistics by category compared to the previous year show an overall decrease in pedestrian and elderly traffic fatalities: ▲pedestrian traffic accident fatalities decreased from 26 to 20 (23.1%↓) ▲elderly pedestrians from 22 to 14 (36.4%↓) ▲elderly drivers from 27 to 23 (14.8%↓).
