Kim Eun-kyung Appointed as Innovation Committee Chair... Will She Reform the Democratic Party with Full Authority?
The Democratic Party of Korea is intensifying its reform efforts by appointing Professor Kim Eun-kyung of Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Law School as the successor to the resigned Innovation Committee Chair Lee Rae-kyung. Within the party, she is highly regarded as a "person with strong determination" and "someone recognized for their work capabilities," but there are also many voices questioning whether she will be able to lead reforms with full authority.
On the 16th, Democratic Party lawmaker Go Min-jung said on CBS's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show,' "There is an expectation that she must be a very determined and bold person," adding, "After hearing some stories from her time at the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS), I learned that even during the change of the FSS chief, she maintained and protected her position."
Democratic Party lawmaker Jang Kyung-tae also said on BBS's 'Jeon Young-shin's Morning Journal,' "She already served as the Deputy Head of Financial Consumer Protection at the FSS and has been fully recognized for her expertise and work capabilities," adding, "Since she demonstrated expertise in the field of financial consumer protection, I hope she will also consider expanding the rights and authority of political consumers."
Amid intense factional tensions between pro-Lee (친명) and anti-Lee (비명) camps over the Innovation Committee Chair position, the appointment of Professor Kim, classified as pro-Moon (친문) and neither pro-Lee nor anti-Lee, appears to be an effort to minimize factional colors. Attention is focused on whether she, with relatively weak factional ties, will hold enough authority within the party to carry out reform activities. The anti-Lee faction points out that it would be meaningless unless she is granted 'full authority,' including the decision on Lee Jae-myung's resignation.
On the morning of the same day, Lee Jae-myung said at the Supreme Council meeting, "I will entrust everything from the name to the role so that the innovation body can renew our party and politics," and the Democratic Party also stated it would grant full authority to the Innovation Committee. However, outside the party, opinions remain skeptical. Hong Moon-pyo, a People Power Party lawmaker, said on YTN's 'News King Park Ji-hoon,' "They said they would give full authority, of course they will. But there is skepticism about whether Lee will actually grant full authority."
The pro-Lee faction is also not actively in favor of granting full authority. Pro-Lee Democratic Party lawmaker Jang Kyung-tae said on SBS's 'Kim Tae-hyun's Political Show,' "I don't really know what the meaning of full authority is. Whether it is the authority of the Supreme Council, the party caucus, or requires the consent of all lawmakers, I am not sure. But anyway, if it is sufficiently reviewed and publicly proposed, I think both the leadership and lawmakers will feel burdened."

Meanwhile, the anti-Lee faction has argued that, with about two months left until the 'first anniversary of the Lee Jae-myung leadership,' the party should discuss whether to transition to an Emergency Response Committee. Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Jong-min said on KBS Radio, "We need to seriously proceed with gathering various opinions or holding discussions among lawmakers, party members, and the public on whether change under the Lee Jae-myung leadership can gain public trust, or if it is judged that this is not working and a new emergency committee system should be established."
