Gyeonggi Special Judicial Police Crack Down on 36 Illegal Lodging Businesses Including Officetels
Gyeonggi Province has uncovered 36 illegal lodging businesses operating in officetels, houses, and apartments without lodging business registration.
The Gyeonggi Province Special Judicial Police for Public Welfare announced on the 15th that from May 15 to 26, they conducted crackdowns on lodging establishments suspected of illegal operations in 11 areas including Suwon, Bucheon, Seongnam, and Goyang, uncovering 36 unregistered businesses (103 rooms).
Major violations include a single operator using two host accounts on lodging reservation sites to illegally run lodging businesses by renting 3 officetel rooms at establishment A in Goyang City and 1 officetel room at establishment B in Paju City, generating illegal sales of 36 million KRW over 9 months.
Establishment C in Bucheon City operated 7 officetel rooms for 5 years, earning sales of 205 million KRW before being caught in this crackdown. Establishment D in Anyang City operated 7 rooms including houses for 5 years, generating sales of 21 million KRW before being caught this time.
These businesses gained unfair profits by operating lodging services without registering with the competent authorities.
The Special Judicial Police plan to take strict measures according to relevant laws, including requesting administrative actions from local governments and referring the cases to the prosecution for the uncovered establishments.
Under the Public Health Control Act, the detected businesses face imprisonment of up to 2 years or fines up to 20 million KRW.
