70-Year-Old Grandmother Donates 500 Million Won Saved Over Lifetime to KAIST
Donation of Remaining Assets After 50 Million Won in 2011
"Please Use for Nurturing Excellent Basic Science Talent"
A woman in her 70s donated real estate worth about 500 million won, her entire fortune, to be used for nurturing talent in science and technology.
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced on the 14th that Ms. Park, a woman in her 70s living in Busan, donated two properties worth a total of 500 million won on the 30th of last month. Ms. Park had previously donated 50 million won in cash in 2011, making this her second donation, totaling 550 million won to KAIST.
It is known that Ms. Park began donating after she happened to hear on the news in 2011 about someone else donating inherited property to KAIST and sympathized with the purpose of nurturing talent in science and technology. Recently, she decided to organize her assets before it was too late and contacted the KAIST Development Foundation expressing her wish to donate all the real estate under her name.
Having raised three children and lived frugally all her life, Ms. Park shared her thoughts: “I made this long-cherished donation because I believe KAIST cultivates outstanding science and technology talents who help many people with unique perspectives rather than fixed views.” She added, “Every time I heard about others’ donations, I thought I should do it someday, and now that I have actually done it, I feel more fulfilled than I expected. I hope this encourages those who are considering donating to make up their minds.”
The KAIST Development Foundation stated that since the donor wished to keep her name and story private, they visited her home to complete the inheritance paperwork without holding any special ceremony.

Meanwhile, it is reported that all three of Ms. Park’s children and family members supported her decision to donate. Ms. Kim, the second daughter who attended the inheritance procedure, said, “Because my mother wanted the fortune she carefully saved throughout her life to be used according to her wishes, the entire family supports and celebrates her excellent choice and decision.”
