'Transportation Big Data' Changes Ulsan City Bus Routes
Analysis of Boarding and Alighting Characteristics, Bus Route Design
Full Route Overhaul Scheduled for the Second Half of This Year
Ulsan City will completely reorganize city bus routes in the second half of this year using transportation big data.
Transportation big data utilizes infrastructure data such as navigation traffic information, transportation card data, vehicle operation records (DTG), accumulated speed information, and data like telecom base station traffic DB. It also includes infrastructure through external DB linkage and inter-agency cooperation.
The 'transportation big data' used by Ulsan City for bus-related purposes mainly consists of transportation card data, telecom signal-based floating population, and bus operation data. Since the second half of 2021, transportation big data has been used to adjust bus routes.
In the second half of 2023, ahead of the first full-scale bus route system reorganization since Ulsan's promotion to a metropolitan city, various analyses and opinion gathering are being conducted to provide transportation services that minimize confusion centered on current users.
Ulsan City expects many changes to city bus routes with the first full reorganization since its metropolitan city promotion in the second half of this year.
To reduce inconvenience for citizens, a route reorganization plan utilizing big data will be derived, and opinions from stakeholders such as citizens, bus companies, and drivers will be collected. A route search website that allows comparison between existing and changed routes will also be developed.
After the bus route reorganization, the city will consider creating 'buses that arrive on time' and 'buses that can be used safely' by utilizing big data related to bus operations.
Ulsan City plans to manage bus operations based on analyses such as bus stop arrival times for passenger convenience and operation times by time zone to improve drivers' working conditions.
