LS Cable & System Advances Development of Multicore Optical Fiber for 5G and 6G
LS Cable & System has embarked on securing core technology for multi-core optical fibers used in 5G and 6G communications. Multi-core optical fibers are next-generation products that dramatically increase data transmission capacity compared to the current single-core optical fibers.
At the 'Next-Generation Optical Communication Technology Cooperation MOU' signing ceremony held on the 13th at LS Yongsan Tower, Lee In-ho, CTO of LS Cable & System (third from the left), Kim Du-geun, Deputy Director of the Korea Photonics Technology Institute, and other officials are posing for a commemorative photo.

The two parties plan to expand cooperation in optical communication technology and personnel exchange, starting with the development of multi-core optical fibers.
Optical fibers, as thin as a strand of hair, are used as the core of optical cables. Currently, single-core fibers are used, but the data transmission capacity increases proportionally with the number of cores, enabling a revolutionary increase in communication speed.
Lee In-ho, CTO of LS Cable & System's Technology Development Headquarters, said, "Multi-core optical fiber technology is highly challenging, with only a few companies in Europe and Japan having succeeded in its development," adding, "We will secure core technology and participate in technology standardization to take the lead in the next-generation communication cable market."
