Gyeonggi-do Launches Win-Win Consultative Body with Ministry of National Defense
Gyeonggi Province and the Ministry of National Defense have agreed to establish a permanent working-level consultative body to discuss military-related issues within the province.
On the 12th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it signed an agreement with the Ministry of National Defense to form a working-level mutual development consultative body at the Northern Government Complex situation room.
According to the agreement, Gyeonggi Province and the Ministry of National Defense will form the mutual development consultative body and discuss cooperation measures to resolve military-related issues within the province.
The consultative body will be co-chaired by the Director of Military Facility Planning at the Ministry of National Defense and the Director of Balanced Development Planning at Gyeonggi Province, with members consisting of department heads related to agenda items from both the Ministry and the province. Additionally, deputy heads of cities and counties in Gyeonggi Province will participate as needed.
The two organizations will hold meetings twice a year, rotating between Gyeonggi Province and the Ministry of National Defense.
The consultative body is responsible for reviewing military-related local issues submitted by cities and counties and discussing solutions.
Gyeonggi Province, with a total area of 10,196 km², has military facility protection zones covering 22.1%, or 2,253 km². The province expects this permanent consultative body with the military to be an opportunity for regional development and mutual growth.
Following the signing ceremony, Gyeonggi Province and the Ministry of National Defense held the first working-level mutual development consultative meeting of the first half of this year and presented nine agenda items.
At the meeting, the two organizations agreed to review the following: ▲ Information sharing regarding the relocation of the reserve forces training center in Howon-dong, Uijeongbu City ▲ Utilization (purchase) of the Ministry of National Defense-owned Seongnam Golf Course in Hanam City ▲ Urban development of Gapyeong-eup Music Station through the relocation of the Air Force base ▲ Relocation of the ammunition depot in Choseong-ri, Cheongsan-myeon, Yeoncheon County ▲ Rapid approval of the northern expansion project plan and partial implementation plan of the Civilian Control Line in Yeoncheon ▲ Reduction of restricted protection zones to revitalize population inflow in border areas ▲ Military consultation related to the establishment of Gamaksan National Recreational Forest in Paju ▲ Amendment of the Military Noise Compensation Act ▲ Resolution of altitude restrictions caused by Seoul Airport.

Choi Byung-gap, Director of Balanced Development Planning at Gyeonggi Province, stated, "We will actively consult with cities and counties within the province and the Ministry of National Defense on military-related issues to make Gyeonggi a land of opportunity." He added, "We expect the mutual development consultative body to serve not only as a forum for discussion but also as a catalyst for mutual growth."
