Temporary Residence, Purchased Rental, Demand-tailored, Care Safe Housing, etc. ? A Total of 78 Mapo Stepping Stone Housing Units Operated
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu: “The district will carefully monitor and protect residents so that no one suffers from poor living conditions.”
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) announced that it has provided ‘Mapo Stepping Stone Housing (Temporary Residence)’ to elderly people living alone who are struggling due to poor housing conditions.
Mapo Stepping Stone Housing (Temporary Residence) is a representative housing welfare project of Mapo-gu that supports emergency housing crisis households and low-income vulnerable housing households to temporarily reside for up to one year.
Mr. Jo Gi-hyeon (alias), an elderly resident who recently moved into the temporary residence, underwent surgery and long-term hospitalization after a fall at the end of last year. After discharge, he has been living relying on a wheelchair and cane due to difficulty moving independently.
The house he lived in was an old building with mold and an outdoor bathroom. The entrance had stairs and narrow corridors that were difficult to navigate with a wheelchair, making it a very vulnerable environment for the elderly resident.
Accordingly, on the 15th of last month, Mayor Park Gang-su visited the household directly with officials through the ‘On-site Mayor’s Office’ (photo) and discussed various support measures. As a result, the elderly resident was offered to move into the ‘Mapo Stepping Stone Housing,’ and after review by the ‘Low-income Resident Housing Stability Fund Operation Committee,’ the district provided a safe and comfortable temporary residence equipped with an elevator on the 26th of last month.
Mayor Park Gang-su said, “It was truly heartbreaking to see the elderly living in poor conditions with physical difficulties, but I am relieved that he was able to move to the Mapo Stepping Stone Housing. We will continue to provide meticulous administration that cares for each resident so that no one suffers due to their living environment, which is the most important foundation of life.”
Currently, Mapo-gu operates not only 27 temporary residences through the Stepping Stone Housing project but also ▲10 purchased rental houses ▲21 Care Safe Housing units ▲20 demand-tailored housing units. From 2019 to last year, a total of 135 households have been supported by the Mapo Stepping Stone Housing.
In recognition of its efforts and achievements in stabilizing residents’ housing, the district was honored last year as an ‘Excellent Local Government in the 2nd Housing Welfare Awards’ hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
