Former Lawmaker Jeong Jeong-sun Found Guilty of Accounting Fraud, Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison
Jeong Jeong-sun, a former member of the Democratic Party of Korea (age 65), was sentenced to prison for accounting fraud committed during the 2020 general election.

View original imageOn the 1st, the Supreme Court's 3rd Division (Presiding Justice Lee Heung-gu) upheld the lower court's ruling sentencing Jeong to two years in prison and a fine of 30.3 million KRW in the final appeal trial on charges including violations of the Public Official Election Act, the Political Funds Act, and the Personal Information Protection Act.
Previously, Jeong was arrested and indicted on charges of receiving 20 million KRW from accounting manager A in March 2020, ahead of the 21st general election, under the pretext of election funds, and having 7.8 million KRW paid on behalf of campaign workers for vehicle rental fees.
He was also charged with spending more than the legal election expenses by paying 15 million KRW in activity fees to unofficial campaign workers, failing to report accounting, and illegally obtaining personal information of about 30,000 volunteers affiliated with the Cheongju City Volunteer Center in collusion with a driver.
The first and second trials found all charges guilty except for some amounts exceeding election expenses and some accounting omissions. He was sentenced to one year in prison for violating the Personal Information Protection Act, and one year in prison with a fine of 30.3 million KRW for violations of the Public Official Election Act and the Political Funds Act, respectively.

Jeong lost his parliamentary seat in September 2021 after accounting manager A, who was indicted together, was fined 10 million KRW. According to the Public Official Election Act, if an accounting manager is sentenced to imprisonment or fined more than 3 million KRW for accounting-related crimes during the election process, the election of the winning candidate for the National Assembly is invalidated.
