Uiryeong-gun Announces Public Contest for Site Selection of County-Operated Crematorium Construction
Support of 10 Billion KRW Development Project Fund for Villages Surrounding Crematorium Construction Site
Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongnam Province, announced the results of a public opinion survey conducted by Gyeongnam Statistics Research from April 14 to 22 to gather residents' opinions on the construction of a county-run crematorium.
The survey results showed an overwhelming 76.1% approval rate, accelerating the construction of the county-run crematorium, a campaign pledge of County Governor Oh Tae-wan.
To ensure the reliability of the survey results, the survey was designed as a sample targeting all residents of the county, with 400 telephone surveys and 100 face-to-face surveys as the baseline. Ultimately, 479 telephone respondents and 113 face-to-face respondents participated, totaling 592 respondents, with a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of ±4.0%p. The results showed 45.9% strongly in favor, 30.2% somewhat in favor, 4.4% strongly opposed, and 11.7% somewhat opposed.
The county has been accepting site proposals for the county-run crematorium from April until May 23. The county has already established ordinances, conducted feasibility studies, and formed a promotion committee. Once the site is selected, construction will proceed promptly.

Governor Oh said, “With changes in funeral culture from burial to cremation becoming common, demand for crematorium use is increasing. Especially during the COVID-19 period, the increase in deaths caused difficulties in securing crematoriums, delaying funerals. The construction of the county-run crematorium will realize the final welfare for residents, and we will invest about 10 billion KRW over five years in villages near the crematorium to support transformative development.”
