Gwangju Seo-gu Council Urges Increase of High-Speed Train Services at Gwangju Songjeong Station
Members of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Seo-gu Council have called for an increase in high-speed train services to eliminate regional discrimination and promote balanced regional development.
All Seo-gu council members gathered in the main assembly hall immediately after the closing of the 311th extraordinary session on the 17th and announced the "Resolution to Urge the Increase of High-Speed Train Services at Gwangju Songjeong Station."
Councilor Im Seong-hwa, who submitted the resolution as the representative proposer, pointed out that the Honam Line KTX has not reflected the continuous increase in passengers.
He also argued that neglecting the inconvenience of using high-speed rail tacitly permits regional discrimination and is a factor hindering regional development, causing regional extinction and job losses.
Councilor Im stated, “KORAIL and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport claim that increasing services is difficult due to a shortage of vehicles and saturated track capacity, but considering that additional Honam Line high-speed trains operate during holiday periods, I believe this is an unacceptable excuse.”
He continued, “Compared to the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, where train operations are increased as needed and weekend trains are added, the discrimination in high-speed rail operations in the Honam region is severe. The clear neglect of Honam during the industrialization process must not continue,” emphasizing the need to increase Honam Line high-speed train services.
