[Reporter’s Notebook] The Jamsil Dome Stadium Is a True Investment for K-Content
On the 15th, JYP Entertainment was the last among the four major entertainment companies to release its first-quarter earnings. Except for SM, HYBE, JYP, and YG all recorded their highest first-quarter earnings since their establishment. This 'earnings surprise' that exceeded market expectations also led to soaring stock prices.
According to the IR materials released along with the earnings announcement, the reasons for the record-breaking performance were similar. Concert revenue, which was almost nonexistent during the same period last year, increased significantly. They literally raked in money through overseas tours. Scenes of people from North America, Europe, and Asia flocking to K-pop concerts, even resorting to scalping tickets, are unfolding everywhere.
The lines stretching in front of concert venues symbolize the golden age of Korean content and culture. While the sight of the world flocking to K-pop concert halls is gratifying, it also brings to mind an uncomfortable truth. The 'holy place' of K-pop concerts is the 15,000-seat KSPO DOME (Gymnastics Stadium). During peak concert seasons, a 'venue booking war' breaks out. The world tour kick-off events for BLACKPINK and TWICE were also held at KSPO DOME. A representative from an agency said, "Every time the government changes, they promise to support K-pop, but in reality, they don't even build a proper concert hall."
In the past, the Korea Culture & Tourism Institute analyzed that BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) generates an economic effect of 1.2 trillion won each time they hold a domestic concert. K-pop concerts are content that offers a 'two birds with one stone' effect, allowing foreigners to both watch performances and travel. Now, not only BTS but several artists with international competitiveness who rank on the Billboard charts have emerged. However, the reality of Korea's poor concert venues is such that it is difficult to even accommodate domestic fandoms, let alone attract tourists.

At this point, what comes to mind is Jamsil Baseball Stadium, where the topic of a 'dome stadium' arises annually like a ritual. Aside from Hanwha Construction being selected as the preferred negotiator, nothing concrete has progressed. The Jamsil Dome Stadium, with over 30,000 seats, can satisfy both the baseball community's long-cherished wish and the music industry's demand for an all-weather concert hall. It can no longer be delayed. Building the Jamsil Dome Stadium, where tens of thousands can enjoy K-pop in the heart of Seoul regardless of the weather, is a true investment for the growth of K-content.
