National Mokpo University Successfully Holds Opening Ceremony of Regional Industry Research Institute
Focusing on Fostering Future New Industries... Coexistence and Development Together with the Region
National Mokpo University (President Song Ha-cheol) announced on the 11th that it successfully held the opening ceremony of its university-affiliated research institute, the ‘Regional Industry Research Institute,’ at 3 p.m. on the 10th at Mokpo University’s Namak Production-type Startup Support Center.
About 200 people from academia, politics, and industry attended the opening ceremony, including former Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Koo Yoon-cheol, Kim Hwa-jin, Chairman of the People’s Party Jeonnam Provincial Committee, Jeon Kyung-sun, Vice Chairman of the Jeonnam Provincial Council, Kim Tae-il, member of the National Education Commission, Jeon Jin-woo, President of the Mokpo University Alumni Association, and Yoon So-ha, Standing Auditor of the Korea Rural Community Corporation, celebrating the first-ever opening of a ‘Regional Industry Research Institute’ at a university in the Jeonnam region.
About 200 people from academia, politics, and industry attended the opening celebration at the Naman Production-type Startup Support Center of Mokpo National University.

The Regional Industry Research Institute was established to take full charge of basic and applied research in key regional industry sectors and the development of future regional industry policies by linking and integrating the research capabilities of professors and researchers related to regional industries held by the university.
Additionally, to respond specifically to each key regional industry sector, the institute is organized into five divisions: △Future New Industries △Shipbuilding and Marine △Energy △Biomedical △Culture, Arts, and Tourism. It plans to support planning and research activities such as building partnerships among the university, local governments, and regional industries and attracting strategic projects.
President Song Ha-cheol expressed at the opening, “The Regional Industry Research Institute will play a crucial role in contributing to the local community by conducting research to solve regional issues in Jeonnam, fostering talent based on regional industries, establishing an employment and startup ecosystem, promoting settlement, and creating jobs, thereby supporting virtuous cycle development.”
Jeollanam-do Governor Kim Young-rok left a congratulatory message, saying, “The Regional Industry Research Institute will establish itself as a core research institution leading regional development as a hub for regional and industry-academic cooperation. We will actively strive to create a win-win coexistence model between the region and local universities so that universities can achieve autonomous growth and development.”
Former Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister Koo Yoon-cheol presented strategies and visions for development that Mokpo University and the Regional Industry Research Institute should pursue through a special lecture, stating, “Korea must create things that do not exist in the world and make existing things number one globally by fostering creative mindsets and innovative talents.”

Furthermore, Lim Han-gyu, Director of the Regional Industry Research Institute, expressed his ambition, saying, “We will focus on planning large-scale projects jointly with local governments and related organizations and fostering future new industries in the region to become a Regional Industry Research Institute that coexists and develops together with the region.”
