Gwangju Seo-gu Dongcheon-dong Selected as Implementing Agency for Reading Academy Public Project

Dongcheon-dong in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, has been selected as the executing institution for the ‘2023 Reading Academy Public Contest Project’ organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

According to Seo-gu on the 10th, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism promoted the Reading Academy project based on books such as literature, history, philosophy, and natural sciences to enhance the reading culture of the public, and publicly recruited institutions capable of planning and operating excellent lecture programs last March.

Dongcheon-dong applied by planning a history program titled ‘Re-reading the Joseon Dynasty through the King's Son-in-law,’ and was finally selected as the executing institution by receiving high scores in the excellence of lecture composition, linkage activities with the Reading Academy, and the ability to operate the executing institution.

Dongcheon-dong is the only neighborhood-level unit nationwide to be selected as an executing institution for this project.

Accordingly, from next month until October, Dongcheon-dong will invite Dr. Shin Chae-yong (Director of the Korean Historical Figures Research Institute) once a month at the Dong Administrative Welfare Center to re-examine Korean political history from the perspective of the son-in-law, who has not been recognized even in history.

Also, while preparing for this public contest project, they actively utilized the BI (Brand Identity) called ‘Dadokdadok Book Village,’ creating a new milestone for the lifestyle government of Seo-gu.

Taking this project as an opportunity, they plan to focus on spreading the reading culture and establishing infrastructure through linked projects reflecting regional characteristics and residents’ demands, such as forming reading clubs.

Kim Yi-gang, head of Seo-gu, said, “This is a valuable achievement made through efforts to expand resident participation linked with the neighborhood BI, which is a key policy of our district, and to realize a lifestyle government,” adding, “I hope Dongcheon-dong becomes a village where all residents, from children to the elderly, become healthier and happier through books.”
