Gwangyang City Launches Population Policy Citizen Participation Group

Exploring Countermeasures for Changes in Population Structure and More

On the afternoon of the 4th, Gwangyang City in Jeollanam-do announced that it held the launch ceremony and capacity-building workshop for the Gwangyang City Population Policy Citizen Participation Group at the Gwangyang Youth Dream Center to guarantee citizens' participation in city administration activities, seek countermeasures for changes in population structure, and discover new population policies.

At this event, Mayor Jeong In-hwa of Gwangyang City presented appointment letters to the Population Policy Citizen Participation Group and invited Min Hyun-jung, head of the Population Policy Support Research Center at the Gwangju-Jeonnam Research Institute, who gave a lecture on countermeasures for the low birthrate, aging population, and the population cliff crisis.

Mayor Jeong In-hwa of Gwangyang City stated, “Our city has an average age of 43, making it the youngest city in Jeollanam-do, but the dead cross began in 2022, and the total fertility rate is also decreasing. Although our city’s population increased in 2022, we will not be satisfied with that and will continue efforts that local governments can make.”

He continued, “The role of the Population Policy Citizen Participation Group here is important for creating a sustainable global future city. As representatives of Gwangyang citizens, I hope you will actively engage in discovering policies that citizens can feel proud of and take pride in.”

Meanwhile, the 2023 Population Policy Citizen Participation Group, newly appointed this year, will carry out various activities such as participating in forums and campaigns throughout 2023 to convey citizens’ vivid voices and discover population policies that citizens can empathize with.
