LS Cable & System Secures Record 2 Trillion KRW Subsea and Underground Ultra-High Voltage Cable Order in Europe
HVDC Power Grid Connecting North Sea Offshore Wind Farm, Cable Supply
World's Highest Voltage 525kV HVDC Cable Commercialized Only in Korea
LS Cable & System is participating in the largest-ever power transmission network project.
LS Cable & System announced on the 8th that it has secured an ultra-high voltage direct current (HVDC) cable contract worth over 2 trillion KRW from the Dutch state-owned power company TenneT.
The project connects the North Sea offshore wind farm and the inland areas of Germany and the Netherlands via HVDC cables. LS Cable & System formed a consortium with Belgian construction companies Jan De Nul and Denys to win the contract.
LS Cable & System plans to supply 525kV-class submarine and underground cables starting in 2026.

Prior to this project, TenneT required major cable manufacturers to participate in a one-year long-term reliability test as a bidding condition. LS Cable & System successfully passed the test conducted last October according to TenneT’s technical specifications and international standards.
HVDC can transmit large-capacity current over longer distances compared to alternating current (AC). It minimizes power loss. Thanks to these characteristics, the adoption of HVDC is increasing mainly in long-distance transmission networks. HVDC cables are also used in renewable energy sources such as offshore wind and solar power.
The 525kV class is the highest voltage among HVDC systems. It has dramatically increased transmission capacity compared to the existing 320kV class. By applying voltage source converter (VSC) technology, the direction of power transmission can be freely changed. LS Cable & System is the only domestic company that possesses both technologies.
