Namhae-gun, 'Creating Climate-Friendly Heatwave Shelters' ... Protecting Vulnerable Groups
Namhae-gun, Gyeongnam, established a 'climate-friendly heatwave shelter' in 2023 as part of the support project for climate change vulnerable groups.
This project was promoted with a total budget of 100 million KRW to actively protect and manage vulnerable groups and densely populated areas that have relatively insufficient coping capacity due to the increasing frequency and damage of abnormal climates such as heatwaves and cold waves.

View original imageNine cooling poles in the form of mist poles, which are eco-friendly outdoor cooling devices and pole-type spray devices, were installed at Lighthouse Park in front of Mijo-myeon Administrative Welfare Center, and it is expected to greatly help children and residents enjoy a cool summer in the park from June to September. In addition, the cooling poles are equipped with LED lights, providing nighttime landscape lighting functions and visual attractions.
The cooling fog system sprays fine water in the form of mist to reduce the surrounding temperature and capture, lower, absorb, and remove airborne dust and fine dust in the atmosphere. The sprayed fine water particles can lower the perceived temperature by 5 to 7 degrees Celsius and the surrounding temperature by up to 10 degrees Celsius.

A Namhae-gun official said, “Starting with Bonghwangsan Narae Forest Park last year, we plan to install cooling poles this year at Mijo Lighthouse Park and Namsan Park in Namhae-eup, and we will continue to actively promote this to provide a pleasant environment for residents, actively respond to climate change, and protect the health of vulnerable groups.”
