Ulsan City: "Claim Your Unclaimed Local Tax Refunds That Are Dormant"
As of April, 13,508 cases, 617 million KRW
58% under 10,000 KRW, expires after 5 years
Ulsan City will operate a joint “Local Tax Unclaimed Refunds Recovery” campaign with district and county offices until the end of May.
“Local tax refunds” occur when local income tax is refunded due to cases such as paying automobile tax in advance annually and then transferring or scrapping the vehicle, or after filing a final national tax return like comprehensive income tax and adjusting the tax amount.
When refunds occur, Ulsan City notifies the eligible taxpayers by sending refund notices and public alert text messages to guide them in applying for refunds.
However, unclaimed refunds occur every year due to unclear taxpayer residence or contact information, resulting in failure to receive refund notifications, or due to taxpayers’ indifference to small refund amounts.
As of the end of April this year, Ulsan City’s local tax unclaimed refunds amount to 13,508 cases totaling 617 million KRW. Among these, refunds under 10,000 KRW account for 7,863 cases, representing 58.2% of the total unclaimed refunds.
Through this unclaimed refunds recovery campaign, Ulsan City plans to raise public awareness about local tax unclaimed refunds and support taxpayers in applying for refunds through various methods.
Local tax unclaimed refunds can be checked without membership registration on “WETAX,” the nationwide integrated local tax payment system operated by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, or on “Government24.” If a refund account is registered in advance, refunds can be conveniently received when they occur.
Refund recipients can check and apply for refunds via an automated tax payment response system phone call without visiting the tax office in person. Additionally, a local tax refund service has been added to the KakaoTalk channels operated by district and county tax offices, enabling convenient refund claims anytime and anywhere.
