Crown Princess Wears Late Diana's Jewelry
The coronation of King Charles III of the United Kingdom was held on the 6th (local time) at Westminster Abbey in London. It attracted the world's attention as it was the first coronation in 70 years since Queen Elizabeth II's coronation in 1953, following her passing last September. Various interpretations also emerged regarding the attire.
The most striking point was that no members of the royal family, except the king and queen, wore crowns. Benjamin Wild, a cultural historian and royal costume expert, interpreted this as "an effort to modernize the monarchy by removing crowns."
Queen Camilla, wife of Charles III, wore an ivory matte silk dress designed by British designer Bruce Oldfield. Oldfield has been creating Queen Camilla's outfits for over ten years and also designed dresses for Diana, Princess of Wales, Charles III's first wife.
The queen's coronation attire was embroidered with wildflowers and roses (England), thistles (Scotland), daffodils (Wales), and shamrocks (Northern Ireland), symbolizing the United Kingdom and expressing affection for nature and the countryside.
She wore a necklace and earrings set with 25 diamonds made in 1858 during Queen Victoria's reign. These jewels were also worn by Queen Elizabeth II at her 1953 coronation.
Catherine, Princess of Wales and Charles III's eldest daughter-in-law, wore an Alexander McQueen dress adorned with the same embroidery as her mother-in-law's outfit. Her fashion diplomacy began on the 4th, when she greeted royal fans in London, dressed in a red coat with a blue lining visible, preparing for the coronation. Underneath, she wore a white dress, which was seen as symbolizing the Union Jack.
Page Six commented, "How patriotic. A look that perfectly matches the Union Jack," while Vogue praised, "The outfit chosen by the Princess of Wales perfectly complemented the Union Jack flags lining the streets of London."
On the day of the coronation, she attracted attention by wearing pearl and diamond earrings once worn by her late mother-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales.
According to the BBC, the necklace was reportedly a favorite of Queen Elizabeth II before her accession, given to her by King George VI when she was in her twenties.
Jewelry expert Joanna Hardy said, "That is the beauty of jewelry," adding, "Jewelry can hold people and memories."
Prince George, Charles III's nine-year-old grandson, wore a traditional uniform consisting of a crimson tunic with gold lace decorations and blue velvet sleeves.
