Yongsan-gu has been providing longevity congratulatory money of 1 million won to seniors aged 100 or older in the district for three years.
This is in accordance with the “Ordinance on the Payment of Longevity Congratulatory Money in Yongsan-gu, Seoul,” which was enacted in 2020. Since the ordinance was established, a total of 51 seniors have received the longevity congratulatory money.
The recipients are seniors who have been registered residents of Yongsan-gu and have continuously lived there for more than three years. The congratulatory money is paid once in the year they turn 100.
Lee Seong-ho (100) from Ichon 1-dong, who received the congratulatory money last April, said, “Living long is something to look forward to,” and added, “I am happily thinking about ‘where to spend the 1 million won.’”
In 2023, there are 34 eligible seniors (32 turning 100, 2 aged 101 or older). The district sent related notices to the recipients in January to inform them of the application process.
Those who wish to apply for the congratulatory money should visit the local community service center within one year from their 100th birthday. If requested by the senior, community center staff will visit them directly to assist with the application.
Applicants must prepare the application form, an ID card in their name, and a bankbook copy in their name. If a family member or proxy visits on their behalf, they must submit the application form, a power of attorney, the proxy’s ID card, the recipient’s ID card, and a copy of the recipient’s bankbook.
The related forms are available at the community service centers. The congratulatory money will be deposited into the applicant’s account around the 15th of the month following the application date.
Kim Seon-su, Acting Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “A society that respects the elderly forms the basis for enhancing understanding between generations,” and added, “We will pay more attention to creating an age-friendly city.”
