"Doing Well" ... 68.3% of Busan Citizens Support 'Preparation for the 2030 Busan World Expo Bid'

Busan City announced the results of the ‘2023 1st Quarter Regular Public Opinion Survey’ to hear the opinions of Busan citizens on major city policies.
This survey was conducted over four days from April 14 to 17, targeting 1,000 Busan citizens aged 18 and older. It gathered citizens' opinions in three areas: ▲ the bid for the 2030 Busan World Expo ▲ major policy issues ▲ satisfaction with Busan city administration.
According to the survey results, in the field of bidding for the 2030 Busan World Expo, 68.3% of respondents evaluated the preparations for the bid, including the response to the on-site inspection by the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), as ‘well done,’ while only 4.4% responded that it was ‘not well done.’
Regarding what should be prioritized to attract the 2030 World Expo to Busan, respondents answered in the following order: ▲ boosting the enthusiasm of Busan citizens and the public for the bid (28.1%) ▲ diplomatic efforts by the central government for the bid (26.2%) ▲ diplomatic efforts by Busan City targeting specific countries (24.9%) ▲ bid activities through cooperation with large corporations (10.1%) ▲ promotional activities using K-culture such as famous celebrities (8.3%).
Additionally, 75.9% responded that the early opening of Gadeokdo New Airport would help attract the 2030 Busan World Expo. The expected benefits of the early opening of Gadeokdo New Airport were answered in the following order: ▲ revitalization of the regional economy through expansion of various infrastructure (29.9%) ▲ creation of 500,000 jobs (25.1%) ▲ convenient 24-hour airport use (20.9%) ▲ balanced regional development (10.6%) ▲ enhancement of the status as a global hub city (9.8%).
In the major policy issues area, awareness and usefulness (usage) of key first-quarter city policies such as the Busan-style public transportation innovation plan, the promotion of the construction of the Western Busan Medical Center, and citizen safety insurance were surveyed. The results showed that although awareness of major policies was somewhat low, more than 75% of respondents said the policies were helpful (used), indicating the need for continuous policy promotion measures.
In the Busan city administration satisfaction area, satisfaction and effort levels regarding the overall living conditions in Busan and the implementation of city policies, as well as areas the city should focus on in the future, were surveyed.
Respondents answered that 68.2% viewed the overall living conditions in Busan as good, an increase of 4.4% compared to 63.8% in the 4th quarter of last year.
Also, 64.7% responded that Busan City is doing well in implementing current city policies, a 2% increase from 62.7% in the 4th quarter of last year. The percentage of respondents who felt that Busan City is making efforts to implement policies for citizens was 71.1%, a slight decrease of 0.4 percentage points from 71.5% in the 4th quarter of the previous year.
Notably, overall satisfaction with living conditions and satisfaction with city policy implementation recorded the highest levels since the 2021 survey.
As for the areas Busan City should focus on, respondents answered in the following order: ▲ revitalization of the regional economy and stabilization of the livelihood of ordinary citizens (45.9%) ▲ expansion of youth employment (23.3%) ▲ strengthening support for childbirth and child-rearing (13.3%) ▲ attraction of large-scale international events such as expos (11.8%) ▲ improvement of residential environment (5.5%).
Mayor Park Hyung-jun stated, “The rise in overall satisfaction with city administration reflects the results of the efforts made by citizens and our city as one team to continuously foster nationwide enthusiasm for attracting the Expo.” He added, “As much as citizens trust Busan City, we will do our best until the final moment of the decision to host the 2030 Busan World Expo, and we will actively promote various policies so that all Busan citizens can feel the benefits of Busan City’s good policies.”

This public opinion survey was conducted by Busan City through Southern Post using the RDD (Random Digit Dialing) method for both wired and wireless phones. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
