Yeongdeungpo-gu Declares War on Everyday Odors
Systematic Odor Reduction Project for Sewers and Odor-Generating Facilities in Daily Life
Conducting surveys, adding deodorants, providing subsidies for air supply device installation, etc.
Minimizing residents' inconvenience and contributing to quality of life through fundamental solutions
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will implement a systematic odor reduction project for sewers and odor-generating facilities in daily life to create a pleasant living environment.
First, from March to June, a "Survey on Odor Occurrence Areas" will be conducted around the Mullae Paragon officetel area. A sewage odor monitoring system will be installed in sewer manholes to measure odors 24 hours a day. Subsequently, fundamental improvement plans for odor causes will be prepared through inspections of private sewage treatment facilities and expert consultations.
From March to October, deodorants will be added to 469 rainwater inlets in nine areas including around Yeouido Station. Except during the rainy season, deodorants harmless to humans will be added at least once a week in amounts of 1 to 1.5 liters, expecting to reduce odor generation.
Additionally, subsidies for installing air supply devices will be provided for odor-generating septic tanks and wastewater treatment facilities. The district will support 90% of the installation cost, up to 2.07 million KRW per set, until the budget of 22.5 million KRW is exhausted.
This is expected to greatly contribute to fundamentally resolving odors from septic tanks, which account for 80% of sewer odor causes.
Furthermore, "odor monitoring personnel" will be operated continuously at all 18 community centers. A total of 90 personnel, five per district, will monitor odor sources such as sewage facilities and waste accumulation in each district. Each personnel will receive a monthly activity allowance of 20,000 KRW.
In addition, the district is promoting odor reduction projects including ▲guidance and inspection of large septic tanks with over 200 people capacity ▲guidance and inspection of 198 air emission business sites such as painting facilities ▲operation of sewage and living odor response teams ▲operation of odor cause investigation task forces.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, "Odor is one of the chronic complaints, and continuous management is more important than anything else," adding, "We will do our best to minimize residents' inconvenience and improve their quality of life by establishing fundamental solutions for living odors."
Gwangjin-gu, Full Replacement of Commercial Food Waste Collection Containers
Free replacement of 20ℓ commercial food waste collection containers for 5,500 restaurants
Work focused on ‘Mat-ui Street,’ a commercial area dense with shops such as Kondae Rodeo Street
Including cleaning and disinfection... Creating a pleasant street environment by improving odor and urban aesthetics
Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is replacing commercial food waste collection containers free of charge for restaurants in the area.
Old and contaminated food waste containers exposed on the streets cause living odors and bacterial growth. Therefore, the district decided to fully replace commercial collection containers to create a pleasant and healthy street environment.
Among approximately 5,500 restaurants, replacement work has started focusing on the main commercial area, "Mat-ui Street." Containers of 20 liters that are old will be replaced with new ones by visiting designated areas on specific days. The work targets five locations including Kondae Rodeo Street, Neungmaru Mat-ui Street, and Migaro, and will continue until October this year.
Along with this, cleaning services are provided to assist hygiene management. Hwayang-dong, which has the highest number of restaurants, is selected as the focus area, where cleaning and disinfection are conducted twice a week. When restaurants place their collection containers outside, a professional company cleans them thoroughly and returns them.
Restaurants wishing to participate can apply on-site when the collection company visits or access via QR code to leave their business name and address for sequential guidance.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, "By cleaning and replacing essential waste collection containers for restaurants, we aim to provide a hygienic environment," adding, "We hope this project helps create a clean urban aesthetic."
