Seo Se-won Responds, "I Was Also Scammed but Trying to Repay"
Claims have emerged that the late Seo Sewon, who suddenly passed away in Cambodia, was experiencing financial difficulties, and it has been reported that an actual creditor appeared at the funeral hall.
According to Sports Seoul on the 1st, creditor A, who lent investment funds to Seo Sewon, visited the funeral hall at Seoul Asan Medical Center where the late Seo's wake was held. He added, "It has already been two years since the deceased said he would repay the debt. Some has been repaid, but I have not received the remaining amount," and lamented, "He left like this, so I don't even know from whom I should collect the remaining amount."
According to text messages disclosed by A, Seo Sewon pleaded, "I was also scammed, but I am trying my best to make it right. I will send it as soon as a little comes in. Please wait just a few more days." It was reported that Seo told A that repayment was delayed due to financial hardship.
Previously, through a YouTube channel, claims were made among those who assisted Seo Sewon locally in Cambodia that "Seo Sewon really had no money and was struggling to even eat three proper meals a day." There was also testimony that about a month before his death, he came asking to borrow just 6 million won, saying he had no living expenses.
Seo Sewon, who debuted on TBC Radio in 1979, gained fame as a representative comedian in the 1990s. He won the Grand Prize at the KBS Comedy Awards in 1995 with the 'Seo Sewon Show' and received a commendation from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 1997.
However, he left the entertainment industry amid controversies such as embezzlement of film production funds and overseas gambling. In particular, the public was shocked when it was revealed in 2014 that he had assaulted his wife Seo Jeonghee. He was sentenced to six months in prison with a two-year probation and divorced by mutual consent the following year.
Afterward, Seo Sewon changed his path to become a pastor and businessman and moved to Cambodia. In 2016, he remarried Kim, a haegeum player 23 years his junior. In 2020, he was reportedly involved in a complex construction project worth 2.5 billion dollars (about 3 trillion won), including Cambodia's state-owned sports TV station.
Meanwhile, Seo Sewon passed away from cardiac arrest on the 20th while receiving an IV drip at Future Hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The bereaved family cremated the body on the 28th and brought the ashes back to Korea to hold the funeral.
