Development plan utilizing local resources such as Jungnangcheon... Expanding communication spaces to continuously listen to residents' opinions
Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is promoting the 'Comprehensive Development Plan Establishment Service for the Jangandong Area' to transform Jangandong into a waterfront cultural urban space.
Jangandong has been a region where development has stagnated due to the absence of urban maintenance and management and limited transportation environment since the Jang-anpyeong land readjustment project in the 1970s and 80s established the Jangan living area. It is mostly flat land and has the regional advantage of excellent natural environments such as Baebongsan Mountain and Jungnangcheon Stream nearby, which has led to a continuous need for a development plan that can maximize these advantages.
Accordingly, the district is promoting a comprehensive development plan establishment service for the Jangandong area (3.1㎢) to respond to changes in urban spatial structure such as the planned new Myeonmok Line, undergrounding of the Dongbu Expressway, and reorganization of the Jungnangcheon waterfront space, and to prepare a new future city strategy including sustainable urban development and fostering regionally specialized hubs.
On April 10, a kickoff briefing session for the comprehensive development plan establishment service for the Jangandong area was held. Twenty-six people including officials from Dongdaemun-gu and Seoul City, as well as external experts, attended. Reflecting expert opinions, the service will expand opportunities for resident participation and establish governance and consultations with related organizations such as Seoul City.
At the same time as the commencement of the comprehensive development plan establishment service in the Jangandong area, resident briefing sessions were held at related community centers to explain the outline and direction of the service and to hold Q&A sessions. Going forward, the district plans to expand communication spaces where the public and private sectors collaborate through resident councils and briefing sessions, continuously listening to residents' opinions to establish comprehensive development together with the residents.
Materials from the resident briefing sessions can be found on the Dongdaemun-gu website under the category of Urban Maintenance, and schedules for upcoming resident briefing sessions and other service progress will also be posted.
Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, "The Jangandong area has infinite development potential, but development has stagnated since the land readjustment project, so discussions on development plans that can fully utilize local resources are necessary. Based on residents' opinions, we will supplement insufficient urban infrastructure and rearrange urban spaces to prepare a new future city strategy such as transforming the Jangandong area into a waterfront cultural urban space."
Old Noryangjin Water Intake Facility Reborn as Dongjak-gu’s First Han River Riverside Rest Area
Remodeling construction of the old Noryangjin water intake facility started in April
Dongjak-gu (Mayor Park Il-ha) announced on the 2nd that it will remodel the old Noryangjin water intake facility located at the southern end of Hangang Bridge into the district’s first Han River waterfront rest area.
The district started construction in April for the '(Old) Noryangjin Water Intake Facility Remodeling Project' and plans to open it as a new leisure space for residents by June next year.
The rooftop of the building will serve as a Han River viewing garden connected to the Bondong area, with the first floor consisting of a cafe and rest area, and the basement level 1 featuring an entrance connected to the bicycle path and a bamboo forest.
It is expected to become a premier leisure facility easily accessible and enjoyable not only for local residents but also for citizens using the Han River bicycle path.
The Noryangjin water intake facility was completed in 1974 and has been unused for water intake since 1992. Since then, it has been used as a leak and emergency repair standby base and material storage yard for the Southern Waterworks Office but has been effectively neglected.
Accordingly, Dongjak-gu and Seoul City completed the design to preserve the historical value of the water intake facility while connecting the Han River promenade and Bondong area in a three-dimensional manner. In April, the Southern Waterworks Office facilities were relocated to an alternative site.
