6 Months Since Itaewon Tragedy... Bereaved Families Urge Ruling Party to Support Special Law Enactment
On the Same Day at 7 PM, 'Memorial Candlelight Vigil' to Be Held
On the 29th, marking six months since the Itaewon tragedy, bereaved families and civic groups once again urged the enactment of a special law to investigate the truth.
The 10.29 Itaewon Tragedy Bereaved Families Association and others issued a statement that day, demanding, "If the government and ruling party bear even a slight responsibility toward the victims, they must cooperate in enacting a special law that guarantees the victims' rights."
They stated, "The ruling party leadership is opposing the independent investigative body included in the special law by misleading public opinion, calling it an all-powerful organization," and urged, "Do not distort citizens' lives and safety for immediate political gain."
They added, "Although six months have passed since the tragedy, the bereaved families' hearts remain on the day of the disaster," and emphasized, "We must uncover why the 159 victims have not returned home."
