"Temperature Completely Out of Control This Year"…Spain Records 'Highest Ever' April Temperature
Spain Records Highest Ever Temperature in April
"Concerns Over Impact on Impoverished Groups Amid Unprecedented Extreme Conditions"
On the 27th (local time), the British BBC reported that an early heatwave hit Spain, recording the highest April temperature ever at nearly 40 degrees Celsius.
Just after 3 p.m. on the same day, the mercury at C?rdoba Airport in southern Spain indicated 38.8 degrees Celsius.
Recently, hot air from Africa has flowed into Spain, causing a heatwave 10 to 15 degrees higher than the expected April temperatures. A spokesperson for the Spanish Meteorological Agency said, "This year's temperatures are completely out of control."
According to major foreign media, the previous day in Seville, two horses pulling a carriage showed signs of dehydration and collapsed on the street. One of them eventually died.
The Spanish government has taken measures. In Madrid, subway operations were increased to reduce passenger waiting times, and public swimming pools were opened a month earlier than usual. School class schedules are also being adjusted. Due to prolonged drought, wildfire alerts have also been issued.
Voices have emerged saying that the heatwave is harsher on socially and economically vulnerable groups. Cristina Linares, a scientist at the Carlos III Health Institute, pointed out, "Poverty is a key factor when explaining why more deaths occur related to extreme temperatures," adding, "Income is the factor most closely related to the impact of heat on daily mortality."

Some have pointed to climate change as the cause of this phenomenon. Saman Burjes, a scientist at the Copernicus Climate Change Service under the European Union (EU) Executive Commission, said, "Europe is warming at twice the rate of the rest of the world," and added, "We know that the faster the warming progresses, the higher the probability of extreme weather events, including heatwaves."
