Governor Kim attended the Labor Day commemorative event held at the Suwon Gyeonggi Comprehensive Labor Welfare Center and stated in his congratulatory speech, "The government's basic attitude toward the economy, diplomacy, inter-Korean relations, climate change, and labor weighs heavily on our hearts on the day we celebrate the 133rd Labor Day."
He said, "The values we pursue in labor are basic labor rights, avoidance of long working hours, revision of low wages, securing safe workplaces, aren't they?" and criticized, "But what is the government's attitude? It is fundamentally shaking the direction we want to go by suppressing union activities and talking about 69-hour workweeks."
He continued, "In very difficult situations such as rental fraud, difficulties faced by the foundational industries, small business owners and self-employed, and deficits in Samsung Electronics' semiconductor division, the government is implementing neoliberal policies that are causing the South Korean economy to regress," he pointed out.
He also said, "Although they verbally claim to be actively responding to climate change, the actual policies are regressive. The basic plans for climate change, carbon neutrality, and green growth have lowered the renewable energy acquisition rate and reduced carbon emission targets in the industrial sector. Moreover, the target achievement timeline has been postponed beyond the current government's term," expressing concern, "Then, can the goals for carbon neutrality and green growth by 2030 really be achieved? Industries related to renewable energy are now on the brink of collapse."
Regarding diplomacy and security, Governor Kim stated, "Hints about supporting lethal weapons in the Ukraine war and relations with China do not show what values and philosophy South Korean diplomacy is based on. This is because value philosophy is not at the center," and argued, "The various principles regarding nuclear non-proliferation mentioned in the Washington Declaration escalate tensions and shake the values we have pursued so far."
He added, "Gyeonggi Province will try to do things differently. Including labor issues, economic issues, and inter-Korean issues, we will set an example and practice from small things in areas where other local or central governments cannot," and emphasized, "I hope that by joining forces, next year, the year after, and the following Labor Days, we can cast away dark feelings, rejoice with happy hearts, celebrate the achievements we have built, and make a promise to pioneer a more productive future."
Governor Kim attended the Labor Day commemorative event following his attendance at the 'Labor Family Year-end Night' event last December, invited by the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, to encourage workers and present commendations.
