'Super Simple Part-Time Job' '50,000 Won in Less Than 10 Minutes' Spam Surge
HooHoo Q1 Spam Statistics Analyzed: 6.34 Million Cases
Stock/Investment Type Ranks 1st at 42.3%
Illegal Game/Entertainment Venue Type Surges by 7.1%P
Spam related to stocks and investments continues to be rampant. Spam related to illegal games and entertainment establishments has also noticeably increased.
On the 28th, VP announced that an analysis of 6.34 million spam reports filed by WhoWho users in the first quarter of 2023 showed that the ‘Stocks/Investment (42.3%)’ category accounted for the largest proportion, continuing from the previous quarter. Although it decreased by 2.0 percentage points compared to the previous quarter, it increased by 4.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year. This appears to reflect the stock market’s slight upward trend while investment sentiment remained cautious.
Next were the categories ‘Illegal Games/Entertainment Establishments (19.3%)’, ‘Loan Solicitation (15.3%)’, ‘Voice Phishing (5.66%)’, and ‘Insurance Subscription Solicitation (3.1%)’ in that order. Spam related to ‘Loan Solicitation’ has been steadily decreasing, down 8.6 percentage points compared to the same period last year. This is interpreted as reflecting a decrease in household loan demand in the era of ‘high interest rates.’
On the other hand, spam related to ‘Illegal Games/Entertainment Establishments’ surged by 2.6 percentage points compared to the previous quarter and by 7.1 percentage points compared to the same period last year. This is due to tactics that lure teenagers by using part-time job recruitment phrases such as ‘super simple part-time job’ and ‘50,000 won in less than 10 minutes,’ encouraging the sending of large amounts of spam related to illegal games and entertainment establishments.

VP stated, “Spam reports, which had somewhat slowed down in January and February, have been increasing since March. In addition to financial fraud caused by voice phishing, there is also the risk of damage related to involvement in illegal part-time jobs.” They added, “It is necessary to check and be cautious in advance by reviewing various damage cases announced within the WhoWho app’s spam news, the National Police Agency, and the Korea Internet & Security Agency.”
